FAQs Frequently Asked Questions

What is a thin skin hair system?

A thin skin hair system, also called poly or polyurethane (PU) hair system, is a non-surgical hair replacement solution made from a thin, clear, flexible polyurethane base. The hair is directly knotted or looped onto the clear poly base and sealed in place with additional layers of clear poly skin, making these systems among the thinnest, lightest, and most realistic bases. The result is a seamless, skin-like appearance that mimics natural hair growth directly from the scalp.

Here is how Superhairpieces client Rick looks with a skin base system:

What is the difference between thin skin, ultra-thin skin, and extremely thin skin hair systems?

The key difference between thin skin and ultra-thin skin hair systems is the base thickness, which directly affects both naturalness and durability. Superhairpieces M101 is a thin-skin hair system for men with a poly skin thickness of 8 mil, and it lasts about 2-4 months. The HD111 and M111 are ultra-thin skin bases at 3-4 mils, while the M111XT is an extremely thin, disposable skin base hair system at 2-3 mils. Both of these thinner-skin hairpieces last about 1-2 months. The thinner the base, the more natural the look, and the shorter the lifespan. The thicker the base, the slightly greater the durability.

What are the different base thickness options (mils) and what do they mean?

"Mils" refers to thousandths of an inch and is the standard measurement for hair system base thickness. To put it in perspective, 1 mil = 0.0254 mm, so 4 mils = 0.1 mm, making it barely thicker than a human hair. At Superhairpieces, the current range includes:

M111XT: 2–3 mils — the thinnest available, extremely natural, light density
M111 / HD111: 3–4 mils — ultra-thin, disposable, V-loop ventilation
M101V: 6 mils — upgraded thin skin with V-loop ventilation, longer-lasting
M161V: 5 mils — soft poly base with Swiss lace front
M101: 8 mils — the most durable thin skin option

The thinner the base, the closer it sits against the scalp, and the more natural it looks, but the more careful handling it requires.

What is V-loop ventilation, and why does it matter?

V-loop is a knotting technique used in the curation of hair systems to create a natural-looking hairpiece. Unlike traditional knotted systems, where knots can be visible through the base, V-loop hairs are threaded through the poly in a loop. This results in two strands appearing per V-loop from one single human hair strand, allowing the hair to move naturally and blend in with the wearer’s bio hair. The trade-off is that v-loop strands shed more easily than knotted hair, which is why these systems are designed as disposable units meant to last only about 4–6 weeks for optimal use.

The combination of the v-loop technique with a poly skin base delivers lightweight, seamless, super-thin skin hairpieces that are realistic and undetectable. At Superhairpieces, we use a special glue formula to seal the V-loop on the top, which makes our hairpiece systems last longer than others in the industry. Our V-loop technique is often used to create natural-looking hairlines and part lines in hair systems, making it a popular choice among those seeking a natural-looking hair replacement solution.

Is thin skin the same as a poly or polyurethane hair system?

Yes, thin skin, poly skin, and polyurethane (PU) are all terms for the same type of base material. A poly base toupee hair system, also known as a skin base hair system or thin skin hairpiece, is made of pure polyurethane material. The terms are used interchangeably across the industry. You may also see the term "PU base" used in product specifications.

How does a thin skin hair system compare to lace or monofilament bases?

Each base has distinct strengths:

Thin skin: Natural-looking scalp appearance, easy to attach and remove, low maintenance, generally shorter lifespan than lace or mono.
Lace: Natural-looking, the most breathable option, allowing maximum airflow to the scalp, excellent for very hot climates, though less durable.
Monofilament: Offers good durability and hair density.

Lace hair systems are breathable and undetectable; thin-skin hair systems are natural-looking and easy to attach and remove; while monofilament systems offer durability and density. The best choice depends on your lifestyle, climate, and how much you prioritize natural appearance versus longevity.

Does a thin skin hair system look natural?

Yes, a thin skin system is widely considered one of the most natural-looking hair system bases. The ultra-thin skin base delivers a seamless, realistic appearance, with hair looking like it is growing out of your scalp. The clear poly base disappears against the scalp, eliminating any visible grid or mesh pattern that can sometimes be seen with lace systems. Models like the HD111 and M111 are especially popular for their undetectable look.

Can you see the base on the scalp under bright lighting?

With ultra-thin models (3–4 mils), the base is essentially transparent. Based on customer reviews of the M111XT, it seems the unit's base disappears once applied to the scalp, leaving a look so real you won't notice where the base starts. Thicker models like the M101 (8 mils) have a slightly more visible base under very bright or direct lighting, though it still looks natural in most everyday settings. To combat this problem, you can use a matte-finish adhesive tape, such as Walker No-Shine tape, to dull the shine.

Is the front hairline undetectable with a thin skin system?

Yes, the front hairline of a thin skin hair system is undetectable. The ½-inch front of units like the Superhairpieces M101 features v-loop ventilation for a natural-looking hairline. The M101V comes with full V-loop construction throughout the base. For the thinnest models (M111, HD111, M111XT), the hairline is virtually undetectable even on close inspection.

How long does a thin skin hair system last?

Thin skin hair systems are generally short-lived. However, many customers say they have used the hairpiece way beyond its stated lifespan. The longevity of the hairpiece eventually depends on the specific model and how well it's maintained. Most skin bases, especially ultra-thin skin hair systems, last only four to eight weeks because they are disposable hairpieces. The M101, with its 8-mil thickness, can last 2-4 months if well maintained.

Why do thinner bases have shorter lifespans?

It is common knowledge among hair system users that natural look and durability do not go hand in hand. The thinner the skin base, the less durable it is. The poly material at 2-4 mils is more susceptible to tearing, especially during removal or if adhesive is applied too heavily. Ultra-thin bases like the M111, HD111, and the M111XT are constructed to prioritize a natural appearance over longevity.

Are ultra-thin skin systems disposable?

Yes, by design, the HD111 is a disposable hairpiece, so it will need to be replaced after a month or two of use. This is also true of the M111 and M111XT. That said, with careful handling, some users have extended their use beyond the typical timeframe.

How can I make my thin skin hair system last longer?

A few key habits make a significant difference:

Always remove the base gently and very carefully, even if it's the first time you are removing it from the box.
Never comb or brush hair when it's fully wet; that's when it sheds easily.
Use glue rather than tape on ultra-thin bases. Glue provides a more realistic appearance than tape because it is smoother, flatter, and shinier.
Remove the system from back to front to put less strain on the delicate front hairline.
Clean the base thoroughly after each removal to prevent adhesive buildup from degrading the material.
Handle v-loop areas (front hairline and crown) with extra gentleness, as those strands shed more easily.

How do I attach a thin skin hair system?

The process involves a few key steps:

Shave and thoroughly clean the bonding area with an alcohol-based cleanser.
Let the scalp dry completely.
Use a blow dryer to help remove excess moisture.
Apply a thin, even layer of adhesive (glue or tape) to the scalp or the base perimeter.
Allow glue to become tacky before applying a second coat if needed.
Position the system from the front hairline first and press firmly with the flat edge of a comb.
Keep the system dry and sweat-free for 24 hours after attachment.

What adhesives or tapes work best with a thin skin base?

You can use wig glue or wig tape to attach a poly skin base toupee to your scalp. However, for ultra-thin models, it is best to use glue given the thinness of their base material, as tape could be seen through the base, and glue is largely invisible and won't seep into the poly base, which results in less cleaning required. Popular adhesive options recommended by Superhairpieces include Ghost Bond Platinum (a water-based glue suitable for most skin types) and Ultra Hold for extended wear.

Can I reattach a thin skin hair system after removing it?

In general, skin bases are meant to be disposed of when removed. However, if you wish to reuse it or need to clean it, you can follow the same method as with any other hair system. That said, reattachment is possible with proper cleaning; just ensure all adhesive residue is fully removed from the base before re-bonding, as any residue will interfere with a clean hold.

How do I remove tape or glue residue from a thin skin hair system?

Superhairpieces recommends two adhesive removers: the Walker C-22 Solvent and the KP Pro Solvent. The C-22 solvent is great for cleaning the scalp and hair systems, and it can be rinsed off with soap and water. The KP Pro is a non-toxic, non-alcohol 2-in-1 adhesive remover and scalp cleanser that is oil-free, grease-free, and residue-free.

To clean the base: apply your chosen remover to the residue areas, let it sit for a couple of minutes to loosen the bond, then gently wipe with a paper towel or cotton ball. Avoid soaking thin-skin bases in solvent for extended periods, as prolonged soaking can loosen the knots and cause shedding.

How do I clean a thin skin hair system?

Brush the hair to ensure it is tangle-free and smooth, starting at the ends and working your way up. Rinse, then submerge the base in a large bowl or sink filled with cold or lukewarm water mixed with wig shampoo.
Leave it to soak for at least five minutes.
Drain the water and rinse the base again before applying wig conditioner from the ends of the hair and working your way up, avoiding the roots.
Always allow the system to air-dry.
Avoid wringing or twisting the hair system base.

Can I shower, swim, or exercise while wearing a thin skin hair system?

With a secure bond, most daily activities, including showering, are possible with a hair system. However, keep in mind that swimming and intense exercise are more challenging, as prolonged exposure to water and sweat can break down the adhesive bond more quickly. If you plan to swim regularly, ensure the bond is strong before entering the water and reattach sooner than your usual cycle.

How often does a thin skin hair system need maintenance?

For disposable thin-skin systems (M111, HD111), a full removal and cleaning is typically performed every 2-4 weeks when the unit is replaced. For more durable systems like the M101 or M101V, maintenance visits to a stylist for cleaning, adhesive reapplication, and blending typically occur every 4–6 weeks.

What products should I avoid using on a thin skin base?

Alcohol-based products: Applied directly to the base, alcohol-based products can dry out and degrade thin poly material over time.
Oil-based conditioners on the base: Apply conditioner only to the hair, not the base itself, as oils create a barrier that weakens the next adhesive bond. It can also make the hair slip easily.
Direct heat on the base: High temperatures can warp or melt ultra-thin polyurethane, damaging the hair. Use a heat-protectant spray before using any heat tools.
Harsh shampoos with sulfates: Use wig-specific or gentle shampoos to preserve the hair and base integrity.

Can I comb or brush a thin skin system when it's wet?

No, this is one of the most important rules of care. One should never comb the hair of a thin skin system when it's fully wet. Wet hair is much more prone to shedding, and the V-loop strands are particularly vulnerable when saturated. Always let the system air-dry before gently detangling with a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends and working upward.

Can I style a thin skin hair system like real hair?

Yes, you can style the thin-skin hair system in many trendy hairstyles. Since Superhairpieces' thin skin systems use 100% real human hair (Indian Remy), they can be blow-dried, curled, straightened, permed, coloured, and styled much like your own hair.

Can I cut a thin skin hair system?

Yes, thin skin hair system bases can be cut to your desired size. You can cut the base to the measurements of your balding area, or create a template and cut the base to it. If cutting at home, use sharp hairdressing scissors and work carefully, especially around the perimeter of the base. Alternatively, Superhairpieces offers a base cut service that you can avail for just $10.

You can also get a professional haircut on the hair system. At Superhairpieces, your hairpiece can be styled with layers, and density can be thinned down as needed.

Can I dye or color a thin skin hair system?

Yes, you can, but ensure it is a human hair system. If you have a toupee made with synthetic hair, it is not advisable to dye it, as the fibers don't have the natural pigments that allow coloring. Superhairpieces only sells human hair toupees, so these can be dyed; however, it is always best practice to dye a lighter color into a darker one. Attempting to color hair lighter is not recommended, as hair dyes are meant to add color, not remove it. It is recommended to have the hair system professionally dyed by a hair replacement specialist experienced with hair systems, as small mistakes can cause the base to change color.

Can I customize the hair density, color, and length of my hair system?

Absolutely, you can customize any of Superhairpieces' skin base models to suit your needs, including hair density, colour, length, gray percentages, and texture. Every feature of the hairpiece can be customized in a custom order. Custom orders can be delivered with a guaranteed delivery option in approximately three months.

Is a thin skin hair system comfortable to wear daily?

Poly skin toupees are generally very comfortable and lightweight, so much so that you will forget you are wearing a hair unit. Thin-skin hairpieces are an invisible hair replacement option that sits so close to the scalp that they are nearly imperceptible during everyday wear.

Is a thin skin hair system itchy or irritating on the scalp?

For most people, no. You can get irritation or damage to your scalp or natural hair, but not from a hair system itself. Instead, the method of attachment usually causes it; this is rare and more on a case-by-case basis. It's possible your skin is having an allergic reaction to a certain type of wig glue or wig tape, which is why it is always recommended to do a patch test first before applying any adhesive to your scalp. Keeping the base and scalp clean also prevents bacterial buildup, which is another common source of itchiness.

Is a thin skin system breathable? Is it suitable for hot climates or active lifestyles?

Thin skin bases are generally less breathable than lace units. It is not advisable to wear skin bases in warm climates or for very active people, unless you are not a heavy sweater. Superhairpieces M158 skin toupee combines poly with French lace, featuring four lace windows on top for breathability, making it the ideal skin base for warm climates or for active people who sweat a lot.

Can I sleep in a thin skin hair system?

Yes, you can sleep in a thin skin hair system. It is advisable to use a satin or silk pillowcase to reduce friction and prevent shedding hair.

How much does a thin skin hair system cost?

Superhairpieces thin skin stock hair systems range from approximately $200 to $400 USD, depending on the model and hair type. Thin skin frontal hair systems come at a much lower price of approximately $80-$90.

Why is the poly base hair system more suitable for beginners?

Many poly base hair systems, particularly thin-skin models such as the M111, HD111, and M101V, are disposable hairpieces that last only four to six weeks (though they can last longer if well maintained). Because of this, they are more affordable than other systems and ideal for beginners who just want to experiment with hair replacement systems initially and see if it is something right for them.

Because of the poly material, skin base systems are generally easy to install, maintain, and remove compared to other bases, making them perfect for first-time hair system wearers who are just starting their journey and/or don’t have time to worry about maintenance. Additionally, the poly material allows more room for error when applying adhesives such as wig tape or wig glue.
