6 reasons your hair system base is wrinkled and how to fix it

Posted by Superhairpieces on Jan 26, 2022

When it comes to hair systems, it is possible you will experience various problems whether it's itchiness, your base sliding off or your hair shedding. For many of these, there are a number of reasons why it could be happening as well as ways to fix or deal with it. The same applies to wrinkly bases.

If you find that your human hair system base is wrinkled or tends to get wrinkly, this can be a big problem as it won't only affect how natural looking your toupee or wig will look, but also make the attachment process difficult as it won't sit evenly on your scalp. There are a couple of reasons as to why wrinkles occur and in this blog, we will look at six of them as well as provide some solutions so you not only know how to fix wrinkles in your hair system, but prevent it from happening in the first place.

Using hot water during cleaning

One reason your hair system could be wrinkly or wrinkled is if you're using hot or even warm water on it. Warmer water can certainly cause the base to stretch which can lead to wrinkles. This is especially the case with poly skin hair systems such as the M111 or HD111 which use an ultra thin skin base.

This is why it's important to use cold water or at the least, lukewarm water whenever you are cleaning or washing your hair system. It is also advised to do the same when you're taking a shower, though in general, it's a best practice to not use very hot water on your head during a shower regardless. This is because it can make your hair dry and lead to hair shedding.

Thick tape being used as method of attachment

Using thick tape during attachment

Another potential reason for wrinkles is the tape being too thick for your hair system. Of course, this depends on the type of tape you're using, but sometimes, hair system wearers prefer to use two layers of tape. This is to provide an even stronger hold to make the unit more secure on your scalp.

However, the problem arises when you're doing this on a thicker base, particularly with a poly skin hair system that isn't ultra thin like the M111 or HD111. If you're using the M101 thin skin hair system, which has a base thickness of 8 mils, it's already pretty thick. Add two layers of tape on top of that and it'll be even thicker. The end result is the tape creating bumps, gaps or wrinkles on the hair system which, in turn, also allows sweat and oils to get into the adhesive bond and weaken it. Instead, use glue as it has a thinner layer than tape which will make your hair system look more natural looking. But if you prefer the ease of cleaning and attachment with tape, look to use only one layer of tape with a strong hold.

Head contours not matching

Head contours

One of the most important things you need to do when purchasing a hair system online is making sure it's the right size. So if your scalp dimensions are around 8''x10'', a toupee or wig that has a base size of 6''x8'' will not work out whatsoever. However, what is equally important is making sure the base contour is one that is suitable for you.

Contours are the outline of your head and at Superhairpieces, we offer hair systems that have either a regular, shallow or deep contour. It's important that you find one that is best suited to the shape of your head. A regular contour is for men who have a standard-shaped head; a deep contour is for men who have a round head with little to no flatness on the scalp; and finally, a shallow contour is for men who have a more flat surface on their head. Choosing a hair system with the wrong contour will not only make wearing it uncomfortable, but also cause air bubbles and bumps.

Stretching the base

Stretching the base

Going back to the previous point, it's imperative that you get a hair system that is ideally suited to the dimensions of your scalp. If you get one that is smaller, that means either you or the hair replacement system salon will eventually have to end up stretching the base in order to make it fit.

While a small amount of stretching should be fine, excess stretching or pulling of the base will result in plenty of wrinkles, folds and bumps. If it's severe, you will not be able to fix the wrinkles at all, end up with a damaged hair system and eventually have to buy a brand new one. To avoid having this happen to you, we recommend measuring your scalp for your hair system so you know exactly what base size will suit you. One pro tip is to go for a larger version of your base unit if possible. If it's too big, you can always cut it down to size. But if it's too small, you can't make it bigger.

Scratching the hair system

Scratching the hair system

It's important that you do not scratch your hair system too much as this can be another reason as to why your unit is wrinkly. After all, just as you would be scratching your scalp, with a hair system on, you're essentially scratching the base material which can cause dents, folds and wrinkles.

There can be many reasons why your hair system is itchy whether it's because of a lack of maintenance, dandruff or other skin conditions, or allergic reactions to your toupee or wig adhesive. Make sure to root out these causes before wearing your hair system next time to prevent yourself from scratching and eventually damaging your men's toupee.

Defective hair units

It's also possible your hair system base is wrinkled because you have potentially received a defective unit. If this is the case upon arrival, do not cut or style the unit as you will likely not receive a refund or exchange. As a general practice, always make sure to check the refund and/or return policy of the hair system supplier you are ordering from.

Additionally, this is why it's important to make sure you buy your hair systems from reputable suppliers such as Superhairpieces to avoid issues like this. You can also refer to the following guide to avoid getting duped by sellers.

How to fix wrinkles on your hair system

How to fix wrinkles

With all that said, what if there are already wrinkles and how do you fix or get rid of them? For starters, we recommend using Just Rite Positioning Spray. This is a positioning spray that is usually applied on the adhesive area so as to move the unit into the right place on your scalp. However, it can also be used for touch-ups and could help get rid of your wrinkles.

Alternatively, you can use adhesive solvent or alcohol to help weaken or loosen the adhesive bonds around the wrinkles on your base. This should hopefully fix the wrinkles before you can reapply the glue to touch it up. However, it all depends on the severity of your wrinkles and if you're unable to fix them, you may have to get a new hair system. But at least now, you will know how to prevent your new unit from getting wrinkled!
