FAQs Frequently Asked Questions

A lace hair system is a non-surgical hair replacement solution featuring a delicate Swiss or French lace mesh base that mimics natural hair growth from the scalp. Lace base hair systems provide a realistic hairline for men experiencing hair loss. These lightweight, breathable, and undetectable lace bases are ideal for people with an active lifestyle.

A French lace hair system features a soft, durable lace with fine mesh that balances realism and strength. It is ideal for everyday wear, providing a natural-looking hairline. French lace is slightly thicker than Swiss lace, making it easier to handle and attach.

Swiss lace hair systems are ultra-thin, soft, and virtually invisible against the scalp. Known for their delicate texture, Swiss lace offers the most natural appearance, perfect for fine or thinning hair areas. It is highly breathable and ideal for sensitive scalps.

Both French lace and Swiss lace are used as a base for many men's hair systems. They both can be customized in terms of hair color, density, and style. While they are both good for realism and breathability, they differ in a few key areas.

  • French lace: slightly thicker than Swiss lace, stronger, easier to handle, slightly less transparent, and still natural-looking.
  • Swiss lace: ultra-thin, more delicate, more transparent, maximum realism against the skin, slightly more expensive, and ideal for fine detailing.

If maximum realism and undetectability are your top priorities, Swiss lace is often the better choice.

If you want a natural-looking, easier-to-manage option, French lace is very effective.

French lace vs Swiss lace hair systems comes down to your lifestyle, budget, comfort needs, and how natural you want your hairline to look.

Durability Stronger and more durable More delicate and fragile
Transparency Slightly less transparent Highly transparent

Lace hair systems at Superhairpieces range from $319 to $499, depending on lace type (French or Swiss), hair density, hair type, and other factors. If you customize a lace toupee, the price might increase. High-quality human-hair lace systems deliver some of the best results for a natural, durable look that fits an active lifestyle.

With proper care, a lace hair system can last up to 3-4 months or more. The longevity of any hair system for men depends on hair type, daily wear, and maintenance frequency.

With proper care, regular cleaning, and professional maintenance, a French lace hair system can last 2-4 months on average.

At Superhairpieces, a Swiss lace hair system typically lasts 1-2 months. Its delicate structure requires careful handling and gentle attachment methods.

Lace hair systems can be attached using:

  • Medical-grade adhesive or glue on the scalp, never directly on the system
  • Double-sided tape on the perimeter of the lace base hair system
  • Optional clips, though they are not generally suggested

Ensure the scalp is clean, dry, and free of oils for maximum hold. Use a scalp protector for additional protection.

Watch how to attach your lace hair system

  1. Detangle gently with a wide-tooth comb.
  2. Use hot water to wash off the residue tape and glue.
  3. Use an adhesive solvent, such as Lace Release spray, on the toupee.
  4. Let it sit for a minute or two.
  5. Gently use a towel to remove the remaining adhesive residue.
  6. Follow up with warm water and a tiny squeeze of dish soap to clean the base.
  7. Wash the hair with sulfate-free shampoo and lukewarm water.
  8. Gently brush from ends to top to detangle.
  9. Condition with a lightweight, hydrating conditioner like 3-in-1 Miracle Protect.
  10. Air dry on a mannequin head to maintain shape.

Watch how to clean your lace hair system

Use a specialized lace adhesive remover, such as Lace Release, or an alcohol-free solvent. Apply gently, avoiding rubbing, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

To cut your own lace hair system, you will need:

  • A template of your bald area
  • A washable soft white pencil
  • A mannequin head
  • T-pins
  • Sharp hair shears
  1. Place your hair system on the mannequin head and secure it with T-pins.
  2. Secure the hair back, then carefully cut off the excess lace in front.
  3. Turn the hairpiece over and pin it back in place.
  4. Place the template on top of the hair system and secure it with T-pins.
  5. Use the soft white washable pencil to draw a line around the perimeter of the template.
  6. Remove the template and carefully cut along the white line.
  7. Remove the excess base and your system will now be an exact fit.

As a first-time wearer, we generally recommend getting a professional haircut with a base cut service from Superhairpieces for ultimate precision.

You can dye a lace hair system, but be careful not to color the lace base.

  1. Clean and dry the system before dyeing.
  2. Protect the lace base by applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly or conditioner to the underside to prevent dye from staining the knots.
  3. Use a semi-permanent dye and apply it gently with a brush, starting from the mid-lengths and ends.
  4. Avoid pushing dye into the roots or lace, as this can discolor the base.
  5. Process for 10-30 minutes, checking the color regularly.
  6. Rinse with cool water, keeping the lace facing down so dye flows away from the base, then shampoo and condition.

Tip: Hair systems are usually already processed, so it is safest to darken the hair slightly rather than trying to lighten it.

While it is possible to dye a lace base human hair system yourself at home, we recommend using a professional hair coloring service for precision and to avoid damaging your hair system.
