How to Clean & Attach a Mono Hair System by Myself?

How to Clean a Monofilament Hair System

Monofilament bases are durable and relatively forgiving during maintenance, but they still require a careful, step-by-step approach to preserve the base and the hair. Here's the full cleaning routine.

Step 1: Gently Remove The Mono Hair System

The golden rule—no pulling, no tugging. Apply Isopropyl Alcohol or C22 solvent to the attachment area to melt and weaken the adhesive bond. Let it penetrate for a minute or two, then gently peel the system away, rolling it back rather than lifting it, until it comes free. If you feel any resistance, stop and apply more solvent. Patience here protects both your scalp and your base.

Step 2: Remove Tape Residue from the Perimeter

Once the base is off, gently lift any remaining tape from the perimeter with a kitchen towel. A kitchen towel gives you just enough grip without being abrasive on the poly perimeter. Work slowly and keep the motion smooth.

Step 3: Dissolve Any Remaining Adhesive

Follow up by applying Isopropyl Alcohol directly to the base, then C22 solvent. These work together to break down stubborn adhesive, oily buildup, or residue that the tape removal missed. Use kitchen towels to wipe the surface clean gently; never scrub aggressively or use sharp tools to scrape.

Step 4: Comb the Hair Before Washing

Before getting the hair wet, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle gently. Always work from the ends up toward the roots. Wet hair is the most fragile state for a hair system. Skipping this step means more shedding during the wash.

Step 5: Wash with a Sulfate-Free Shampoo

Use a mild, sulfate-free hair system shampoo specifically designed for hair systems. Work the shampoo through the hair in a downward motion. Never use circular scrubbing, which causes tangling and shedding. Be especially gentle around the mono base itself.

Step 6: Rinse, Condition, and Air Dry

Rinse thoroughly with cool water to remove all shampoo residue. Apply a lightweight conditioner, leave it briefly, then rinse again. Follow up with a leave-in conditioner spray to keep the hair soft and manageable. Place the system on a wig stand or mannequin head and allow it to air dry completely. Never wring, twist, or rub the base to preserve its integrity.

Thoroughly clean
Oil-free
Dry

Once positioned, press firmly from front to back, working out any air bubbles as you go.
Hold the front down firmly for about a minute to set the bond.
Keep the system dry for at least 24 hours after attaching for the strongest hold.
