Flaunt Superhairpieces curly hair systems made from real human hair, and thank us later when your confidence goes through the roof, and you get compliments from your guys and a ton of female attention.

But, before you don those irresistible curly hair systems, here are some things you need to know:

First, Ask Yourself: Are You Ready for the Hair Restoration Journey?

Getting a hair system is one of the best decisions a man can make for his confidence, but it comes with a real learning curve that most people don't anticipate.

Before Kathy installs a single system, she has an honest conversation with every new client:

"Are you really ready for this journey? It's not your hair, so what you used to do before doesn't work now. Learn the journey, and you'll be good to go."

She compares it to buying a new car. The purchase price is just the start; you still need to budget for insurance, oil changes, brakes, and everything in between. A hair system works the same way. The installation is the beginning, not the finish line. You need to budget in maintenance, hair system products, new hair systems, etc.

Hot Water Is Not Your Friend

This is the rule that gets broken most often, and it causes more damage than almost anything else.

Hair systems have no natural scalp oils feeding them, which means they're already working with limited moisture. Hot water strips whatever little is left.

Kathy's wash method for curly systems is deliberate and gentle:

  • Rather than applying shampoo directly to the hair, she fills a bowl with water and product and gently works the shampoo through it.
  • After washing, conditioner is applied while the system sits on a styrofoam dummy head, covered with a plastic cap, for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • The rinse that follows should be as cold as possible. Cold water seals the cuticle, locks in moisture, and helps the curl hold its shape.

Products You Need for Curly Hair Systems

Moisture is everything with curly hair systems for men, and the biggest mistake wearers make is using too little product, not too much.

"Everybody's so afraid to put product on it and then wonder why it looks dry and doesn't look good," Kathy says.

The five non-negotiables for any curly hair system wearer:

  1. A moisturizing shampoo
  2. A deep conditioner
  3. A leave-in conditioner
  4. A mousse
  5. A silicone or oil-based serum

These can and should be layered together.

"Put the mousse, put the serum, spray the leave-in conditioner, rub everything together, but make sure you take your time and saturate each section. There's no such thing as rush for curls."

Always apply by hand, working section by section through the hair. For tighter curl patterns, switch from liquid to cream-based products, as the hair tends to dry out faster. A helpful daily habit is keeping a small spray bottle filled with distilled water and cream leave-in conditioner on hand for a quick moisture refresh between wash days.

One rule that cannot be broken:

“Keep all products away from the roots and the base of the system. Applying the product too close to the bond will cause the system to lift away from the tape.”

The Best Base for Curly Hair

There is no best base as such. It all depends on the client’s preference and lifestyle, which is why Superhairpieces offers curly hair toupees in different bases - skin, lace, and mono hair systems.

For clients on a budget, a monofilament base is the most practical and cost-effective choice for curly styles. For those with more flexibility, a full-lace base provides the most natural movement and holds volume beautifully, which matters a lot for curly hair.

As Kathy puts it, lace bases "tend to be nicer" for this style.

How Long Does a Curly System Last?

The durability of curly hair systems is generally 2-4 months, but it depends entirely on you. With consistent care and the right products, a curly hair system can last up to six months or longer. Without that care, the timeline shrinks fast.

"If you're kind to it, I can see it lasting up to six months or maybe even longer. If you're not kind to it, well, we both know how that goes."

Night Time Routine for Curly Hairpieces

The nightly routine is the most skipped step in hair system maintenance, and it shows up in the condition of the curls within weeks.

Kathy says, “Every night before bed, a silk or satin bonnet should go on. If a bonnet doesn't appeal, a silk or satin pillowcase is the next best option. Cotton creates friction against hair and is a leading cause of overnight frizz and tangling. In the morning, a small amount of leave-in conditioner is usually all that's needed to revive the curl pattern before starting the day.”

How to Comb a Curly System

The rules here are simple but firm:

Never dry brush. Only detangle when the hair is wet and coated with conditioner, and always use a wide-tooth comb, one with generously spaced teeth. Start from the ends and slowly work upward. Detangling brushes can work in the right hands, but a wide-tooth comb is the safest, most reliable tool for keeping curls intact.

"You're just making sure you're detangling it," Kathy explains. "Don't use a fine-toothed comb and wonder why you have frizz."

How Often to Wash Your Curly Hair System

Once a week is the general target, though how much product you use will determine whether you need to wash more or less frequently. Heavy product use leads to buildup more quickly, which makes hair look dull and heavy.

For in-between wash days, Kathy recommends co-washing, that is, rinsing the hair with a diluted conditioner-and-water mixture instead of shampoo.

"You'll do one shampoo, one co-wash, one shampoo, one co-wash, depending on how much product you use." It cleans without stripping, keeping the curl pattern intact between full wash days.

How to Keep Curls Looking Fresh for Weeks

Consistent moisture and gentle handling are what separate a curly system that still looks great at week six from one that's already frizing and matting at week two.

Serum is particularly important for tighter curl patterns, "for the really curly curly hair, to keep it soft and subtle looking, the serum is very important."

For longer-term care, Kathy recommends an occasional deep-conditioning treatment done entirely on the head. Remove the system, wash it, deep condition it, and let it sit under a hooded dryer on low heat. Think of it as a spa day for the hair. "When they get it back, it looks brand new again."

Can We Straighten a Curly System?

The short answer is: don't.

For those who are genuinely curious, Kathy's advice is to test a small section first on the lowest possible flat iron setting, passing over it just once. The curl should bounce back after washing, but only if the heat was kept low.

"As long as you don't overheat it," she notes. Overheating can permanently alter the curl pattern, and there's no fixing that. The official recommendation is to leave the heat tools out entirely.

How Long Do Permed Curls Last?

A permed curly system should hold its curl for the full duration of wear, assuming heat hasn't been applied excessively. On longer hair systems, some natural relaxing of the curl can occur over time due to the weight of the hair.

If the curl pattern has been damaged or lost, reviving it is not straightforward.

"There's no reviving, it's not your real curl," Kathy says. Re-perming is sometimes possible, but "it's not a guarantee, and I don't suggest it."

How to Remove a System for Daily Wearers

For those who prefer to take their system off each night, daily-hold tape is the right choice. Removal is simple: a small amount of alcohol sprayed along the bond or a blow dryer on a warm setting held close to the tape will release it cleanly. Walker Blue tape is a popular option for this routine, though Kathy notes it breaks down quickly with heat and perspiration:

"If they wear it past three days or if they're really sweaty, it breaks down very easily."

How Often Should You Fully Remove and Reattach a Curly Hair System?

Two weeks is the professional standard. Three weeks is the absolute maximum. In summer, Kathy holds firm at two weeks, no exceptions.

The most common pushback she hears is from clients who insist they don't sweat. Her response is always the same:

“Even without visible sweat, the scalp naturally produces oils and sebum that get trapped underneath the system. That's very unhygienic for yourself."

The analogy that tends to land best: "You take your hat off every day, don't you?"

And for the clients who still aren't convinced, she goes deeper. The scalp is living skin, the body's largest organ.

"Everything seeps through your scalp into your follicle, into your bloodstream, into your brain. And then you wonder why certain things are reacting all over your body, because you're not removing the system to clean your scalp."

How to Match a Curly Hair System to Your Natural Hair

Curl matching is one of the most nuanced parts of the process and genuinely requires an experienced eye. Most people naturally have more than one curl pattern across their head, looser at the sides, tighter at the crown. A good installation reflects that layering rather than applying a single uniform curl throughout.

For men with straight hair who want a curly system, Kathy uses a deliberate technique - looser curls around the perimeter and tighter curls toward the top.

"Logically, in real life, that's how it is. As the natural hair grows in at the sides, the transition looks intentional rather than mismatched. The sides will still need regular trimming to keep the blend clean."

For anyone wanting to match their existing curl pattern accurately, a consultation is the only real answer. "If they really want to match what they have, they should come into Superhairpieces for a professional consultation."

The Biggest Myth About Hair Systems

That they're flawless.

"They're artificial, like everything else. Glue is glue. Fabric is fabric. Tape is tape. They melt, they move, they tear."

Hair systems are an incredible tool for enhancing your appearance and rebuilding confidence, and in the right hands, they look remarkably natural. But unrealistic expectations are the fastest route to disappointment.

"We try our best to make it look flawless, but they're not. They're to enhance what you have," says Kathy.

Pro Tips for a First Date with a New Curly Hair System

Style your hair first, then put the silk bonnet on while you finish getting ready. Once you're dressed and about to walk out the door, take the bonnet off, apply a touch of leave-in conditioner, and go. It retains the hair's moisture, keeping the curls intact and not frizzy.

The Wow Factor with a Curly Hair Toupee

For all the maintenance, the learning curve, and the lifestyle adjustment, the moment a client sees himself in the mirror for the first time makes it all worthwhile.

Kathy recalls one young client who came in uncertain about what to expect. "When he put it on, he turned away from the mirror and looked back. He said, 'Oh my gosh, it looked really nice.' I said, 'What did you expect?' He goes, 'I didn't expect it to look this good.'"

That's the wow factor. And according to Kathy, it never gets old. "You see the brightness in their face. No company pays me enough to lie; if I tell you you look good, you look good."
