If you are not yet sold on the idea of wearing a hair system or you feel lost navigating the alternative hair world, we have put together some frequently asked questions that will help you make an informed decision.
This comprehensive guide answers all your burning questions about showering with a toupee.
Let’s get straight in!
FAQs About Showering With a Hair System
1. Can I shower with a toupee?

Yes, you can shower while wearing your toupee.
However, you can not wash it the same way you do your natural hair. Hair systems require more care and attention and need to be washed in a specific way.
Important - Do not shower for at least 24-48 hours after installation.

This waiting period is crucial as it allows the adhesive to cure properly and create a secure bond with your scalp.
Getting your system wet or sweaty during the first 24-48 hours after a fresh install could affect the bond and potentially cause your men’s hairpiece to lift.
If you have a special event coming up, plan your installation timing accordingly, preferably a few days in advance. You don't want your hairpiece lifting or falling off during an important occasion simply because you didn't allow enough curing time.
2. What types of hair replacement systems can I take a shower with?
You can only shower with a toupee hair system.
Men’s wigs, on the other hand, are not supposed to be worn while showering. They are easily detachable and should always be taken off and stored properly at the end of the day, before sleeping, to prolong their lifespan. This is one of the reasons wigs tend to have a longer lifespan than men’s toupees, as they undergo less wear and tear.
3. How to wash my toupee in the shower?
Showering with a toupee is easier than it seems.
Start by applying a wig-friendly shampoo from roots to ends in one direction. Do not rub the shampoo in or scratch the base while shampooing. Rinse thoroughly and apply conditioner in the same way, but disperse it from mid-length of the hair to ends with the help of a brush. Avoid conditioner at the roots to prevent hair shedding. Rinse thoroughly and towel dry (do not rub, just blot with a microfiber towel), and spray in some leave-in conditioner & style the way you normally do your natural hair. If you are in a hurry and prefer heat styling, always use a low heat setting to avoid damaging your hairpiece.

4. Which shampoo and conditioner should I use for hair systems?
Always use a sulphate-free wig-friendly shampoo for hair systems. Your regular shampoo can cause more harm than good, stripping the hair of its moisture and drying it out, leaving it looking dull and frizzy.
Here are a few shampoos our stylists love:
- Hydrating Shampoo for Human Hair & Prime Blends 8oz
- Back2Natural HydroBalance Shampoo 8oz
- Wet & Wavy (red)
5. Can I use the same wig shampoo and conditioner on my natural hair?
Yes, you absolutely can!
The gentle, sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners recommended for hair systems are also excellent for your natural bio hair. This means you can streamline your routine with products that work for both.
6. How often should I shower with a hair system?
The frequency depends on your lifestyle. Most hair systems for men can handle daily washes; however, we have some tips for that.
If you exercise regularly, sweat a lot, or work in environments that make your hair oily and dirty, daily washing may be necessary. But, here comes the plot twist - only wash with water.
Alternately, you can skip the shampoo and use conditioner instead.
Ideally, if your system does not get too dirty, avoid washing it frequently. Once a week or once in two weeks would also work fine. The less you wash, the more you avoid damage.
We have a few clients who don’t wash their hair system for a month or two, and still have their units last longer than the average user.
Notice your hair system and switch up your washing schedule accordingly.
7. Will the glue or tape dissolve during showering?
No, quality adhesives (wig glue and tape) such as the ones available at Superhairpieces do not dissolve when you shampoo your toupee in the shower.
Standard hair system glue and wig tapes are designed to withstand regular water exposure. You do not need any special waterproof tape for that.

8. Is it common for hair systems to shed while showering?

No, it is not common for your hairpiece to shed in the shower. Excessive shedding usually indicates improper technique or harsh products.
However, there are some exceptions to this:
If you have received a new toupee or a hair system after a haircut, expect to see some shedding for the first two washes. This is just the loose hair left from haircuts or factory manufacturing.
9. Why do I need to avoid hot water while washing my toupee?
Hot water is your hair system's worst enemy. One reason for this is that your hair system doesn’t have the benefit of oils produced by the scalp to replenish and hydrate it. Hot water not only strips your hair of its oils but also makes it dry, brittle, and prone to shedding.
Additionally, hot water can affect your adhesive’s hold and prevent it from staying on, which is another reason to avoid it. Instead, use cold or lukewarm water when taking a shower. Your shower won’t be as enjoyable as before, but your hair system will thank you for it in the long run.
Pro Tips:
- Use conditioners for proper hydration
- Comb while the conditioner is still on to avoid matting, and carefully detangle
- Air dry or use a low heat setting
- Don't concentrate shampoo in one area (like the top of the head) as this causes excess shedding in that spot.
- Try to dilute and lather the shampoo in your palms before applying it directly to the toupee.
- Do not use hard water, as it can cause mineral buildup
- Do not use conditioner or serum on the roots
- No combing the hair when it is wet
- Be extra careful with V-loop and skin hair systems
- Leave-in conditioner is a must
Remember, your hair system is an investment. Treating it with care during showering and washing will significantly extend its lifespan and keep it looking natural and healthy.
